Sam Johnson

Project Specialist

Sam Johnson worked under the leadership of Mayor Stephen K. Benjamin, Columbia’s 36th mayor, who was elected in July of 2010. In helping to lead the Mayor’s priorities, projects and initiatives, he had the pleasure of coordinating everything from transparency initiatives like the Bull Street re-development and revitalization efforts like the Famously Hot New Year celebration. Prior to entering this post, he worked for former Representative Anton J. Gunn (D-Richland) in the South Carolina House of Representatives.

Sam is a lifelong resident of Columbia with strong roots in neighboring Fairfield County, graduating from Spring Valley High School before attending the University of South Carolina. He holds dual degrees in English and Political Science.

He is very engaged in the community. Sam has participated and consulted on various political campaigns and issue initiatives. He has previously served as the Third Vice Chair of the Richland County Democratic Party.

He currently serves on the board for American Bar Association’s Law Student Division, Midlands Technical College’s Division of Human Services, the Executive Committee of the Capital City Club’s Board of Governors, Senior Resources, The Nickelodeon Theatre, South Carolina PASOs, and he serves as Chair of the board of the South Carolina Afterschool Alliance. He has previously served on the Columbia Opportunity Resource (COR) and Tapp’s Arts Center’s Board of Directors.

Leaving the public sector, Sam joined Nexsen Pruet as a law clerk during his first year of law school. He utilizes the experiences, his network of elected officials he’s built relationships with from around the country, and his knowledge of local and state government to assist NP Strategy and its clients.
